We've spent a few weeks studying and performing Tom Stoppard's Arcadia for Tacoma Art Museum. A stupendous effort for two performances. Shakespearian actors have a certain confidence that working with the works of the world's greatest playwright will make working with contemporary text a snap. Find the rhythem, find the sound, find the map the playwright leaves you and there is an ease. One contemporary playwright who challenges that ease is Tom Stoppard. He strings complexity within complexity. His work demands quick and game within game thinking. It is string theory and quantum theory made manifest. Some actors are up to the challenge and some are challenged beyond their capabilites but will always come away with a greater expectation of their own capabilities and the realization that they will expand their tool kit.
